This is the second podcast with Gabriela, this time we will focus 100% on the writing.

Her questions are below in italics, followed by a summary of my answer.

Q1, Can I use two examples of studies, I mean one for each body paragraph, or is it better to use only one, and for the other example just talk about a tendency in general?

Using two examples is ok, but make sure you use a different grammatical structure for each one.

Good way:

-1- For example, a recent study by the UK government showed that three out of four males under 35 preferred to work as an independent contractor.

-2- Take for instance recent statistical data collected by academic experts at Oxford university, their data clearly shows a direct correlation between crime and income.

Bad way:

-1- For example, a recent study by the UK government showed that three out of four males under 35 preferred to work as an independent contractor.

-2- Take for example, a recent report by the charity Oxfam showed that five out of ten students preferred to work in the library than at home.

The second example uses pretty much the same vocabulary and grammar in both sentences, this makes it difficult for the examiner to award points.

Q2, For those questions “Agree or disagree”, can I agree to some extent?

Yes, you can, but it can make it harder to write and possibly more difficult to read. I would recommend this route if you are very confident about with your writing. It should not be forgotten that writing a discursive essay is not essential to score a Band 7 but a clear coherent essay is.

Q3, In your course, you correct 8 essays, is it enough? For my last test, I was writing 2 essays daily?

Each student is different, if they want the guarantee of “Jump to a Band 7 or it’s Free“, and they are at 6.5 already, then from experience 8 essays is usually enough. However, they must be completing them quickly, not 2 essays in January and the next two in October. If the student is working well then the whole writing course can be completed in 10 days.

Q4, To get a band 7, is it ok to write sentences like “some people believe…” “Many children

It is ok, but you would be better to transform the generic words into more specialist vocabulary that will score more points.

Some people believe > Various economists postulate…

Q5, Do you think is a good idea to try to write the letter in 15 min in order to have more time

In the interview, I made a small mistake at this point, but anyway, yes I do think so, especially if you are taking the General test.

Q6, Having gotten 6,5 all this time, how long would it take to get 7? I’m thinking about taking the next test on June, 4th.

Gabriela will take her exam on June 4th, she is doing the Sentence Guide course and will get her official exam results around June 18th. I have already arranged a follow-up interview, hopefully, it will be an IELTS SUCCESS STORY. Let us see what happens…
