IELTS Writing – Consistency and Coherence
What is consistency and coherence in your IELTS essay?
Consistency and coherence is the resulting smooth flow of ideas makes your work easier to read and allows it to be more persuasive. While very few mistakes are permitted even at band-seven, an examiner who must stop frequently to comprehend your thoughts will struggle to see the merit in your arguments.
Pronouns and Prepositions
Pronouns are used to avoid repeating the noun, and prepositions explain the relationships between things. Whether the ball is on the table or from the table is important. Prepositions and pronouns may be small words, but mistakes in their use can cause confusion.
Plurality and Possession
- Student, students, student’s or students’?
- Student – Singular – The student is in the cafe drinking coffee (One person)
- Students – Plural – The students are in the care drinking coffee (Everyone)
- Student’s – Singular Possessive – The student’s coffee is cold (One person)
- Students’ – Plural Possessive – The students’ coffees are cold (Everyone)
Once again we see that very small errors can cause the best of arguments to become nonsense!
Tenses and Transitions
Often known as “cohesive devices”, the words we use to transition between ideas, sentences and paragraphs such as “Furthermore”, “While”, “Although”, and even “but”, provide the context of our sentences. Additionally, the verbs of your sentence must be conjugated according to the relevant tense; how well do you know your past-perfect-participle from your past-perfect-continuous?
Proofreading and Practice
Getting to grips with all of the ideas above takes practice and repetition. Developing the skills of a proofreader will enable you to aim for band-eight in IELTS writing.
