Mei had exactly 10 months before she would move to the UK and was able to study for one hour in the morning, an hour each evening and more time at the weekend. She needed to fit studying around those times.

Self-paced learning means that you can study when you have time, wherever you are, and for as long as you want. This flexibility is especially important for people who are working or studying, as it allows them to fit language learning into their existing schedules.

What is the fastest way to learn English online for free?

Step 1: Choose your language challenge

Mei had a big overall goal – to be ready to move to the UK in 10 months. At the end of that time, she also needed to take the IELTS test for residency. However, she set herself a lot of mini goals to keep motivated and focused.

Here are three different types of challenges you can try:

  1. 30-day challenge: This challenge involves committing to studying English every day for 30 days. It can help learners establish a study routine and develop discipline. You can use resources like Duolingo or Babbel to practice your English skills daily.
  2. Speaking challenge: This challenge focuses on improving your speaking skills. You can join language exchange platforms like Tandem or HelloTalk to practice speaking with native English speakers. Set a goal to have at least one conversation per week.

This challenge can improve your vocabulary and comprehension skills. Use resources like Newsela or ReadWorks to find suitable reading materials.

Step 2: Choose your English course

Making mistakes is an essential part of the language learning process, especially when learning online. Embracing mistakes can help you improve faster and gain confidence in your abilities.

Remember that everyone makes mistakes, even native speakers. So, don’t let fear of making mistakes hold you back from practising and improving your language skills.

Mei had always believed that it was a bad thing for a student to make a mistake, and it was better to stay silent than to get an answer wrong. Through learning English online, she is much more comfortable making mistakes!

Finally, don’t forget to build your English reading skills with comprehension exercises. Practice with readings on grammar topics, holidays, and news articles. Remember, effective learning doesn’t have to be boring! Build your skills each day with engaging exercises and playful characters.

Step 6: Make an effort to speak perfectly every time you speak in your new language

Here are some practical tips to help you achieve this goal:

  1. Practice, practice, practice: The more you speak, the more comfortable and confident you will become.
  2. Focus on pronunciation: Take time to learn the correct pronunciation of words and practice them until they become second nature.
  3. Pay attention to grammar: Even small mistakes can impede communication, so make sure to brush up on grammar rules and practice them in context.
  4. Use resources: Take advantage of language learning resources like online courses, language exchange programs, and language tutoring services to get feedback on your speaking skills and improve over time.

Needless to say, Mei’s hard work paid off. She achieved a 7.0 in IELTS General Training and felt confident that even if she didn’t understand everything, she would be able to communicate in her new country.
