How to become naturally fluent in English with practice

1. Practice speaking English

To become naturally fluent in English, consistent practice is key. The most important thing is to speak English as much as possible with different people.

When practising speaking, don’t be afraid to make mistakes and always work on your pronunciation. Learn whole phrases instead of just words, and accept that you may feel uncomfortable speaking English at first.

Remember, fluency takes time and effort, but with determination and consistent practice, you can reach your goals. Don’t focus too much on grammar and try to have fun while practicing.

2. Understand how English works

Understanding how English works is crucial for effective communication in the language. To achieve this, it is important to have a good grasp of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

To improve your grammar, it is helpful to study intentionally and memorize irregular verbs and other tricky topics like subject-verb agreement. You can use exercises and quizzes from grammar books or online resources to practice and reinforce these concepts.

Pronunciation is often an overlooked aspect of language learning, but you’ll need it for effective communication. Listen carefully to native speakers and try to imitate their pronunciation.

3. Listen to English speakers

If you want to become naturally fluent in English, listening to native speakers is essential. You need to use the same words and expressions that they do. Thanks to the internet, there are many ways to listen to English, such as through podcasts, movies, and music.

To expose yourself to English every day, change your phone, social media, and tablet settings to English, read the news in English, and commit to watching TV shows and movies in English. Join an English conversation club or connect with English speakers online.

4. Practice speaking English with a partner

To practice speaking English with a partner, start by finding a language exchange partner through language exchange apps or online communities. Schedule regular practice sessions and focus on a specific topic or skill each time.

Be an active listener and provide feedback to each other. Record your conversations to review and improve your pronunciation and grammar. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and use new vocabulary.

The benefits of practising with a partner include increased fluency, confidence, and motivation. Additionally, practising with a partner allows for more natural and authentic conversations, which can prepare you for real-life situations.

5. Read, listen to, and write in English often

Reading, listening, and writing are essential activities to become naturally fluent in English. Each activity provides different benefits and should be practised regularly to improve your skills.

Here are some tips and strategies for practising each one effectively:

  • Reading: Reading is an excellent way to learn new vocabulary and improve your grammar skills. You can start by reading short articles or books that interest you. Try to read something in English every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. You can also highlight new words and phrases and write them down in a notebook to review later. This will help you remember them and use them in your own writing.
  • Listening: Listening to English speakers is a great way to improve your pronunciation and comprehension skills. You can listen to podcasts, watch TV shows or movies, or even attend English-speaking events. Try to listen to something in English every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. You can also practice shadowing, which involves repeating what you hear in real-time to improve your speaking skills.
  • Writing: Writing in English is an excellent way to practice your grammar and sentence structure. You can start by keeping a journal in English, writing short stories or even emails to English-speaking friends. Try to write something in English every day, even if it’s just a few sentences. You can also use language learning apps or websites that provide writing prompts to help you practice. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and be sure to review your writing to identify areas for improvement.

6. Use the techniques that work for you

Decide what you want to work on first and to find a teacher or program that is enjoyable and interesting.

To emphasize the reader’s personal experience, it is recommended to write down common sentences used at work and in daily life, record oneself reading them, and gradually work towards creating short stories or anecdotes.

7. Be patient and keep practising

Becoming naturally fluent in English takes time, patience, and practice. It is important to remember that fluency is a process and not an overnight achievement. So, you should:

  1. Practice regularly: Consistency is key when it comes to language learning. Make it a habit to practice your English skills every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
  2. Embrace mistakes: Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process. Learn from them, correct them, and move on.
  3. Focus on progress, not perfection: Fluency is about being able to communicate effectively, not about being perfect. Celebrate your progress and don’t focus too much on small mistakes.
  4. Set achievable goals: Set realistic and achievable goals for yourself. This will help you stay motivated and track your progress.
  5. Stay motivated: Find ways to stay motivated, such as setting rewards for yourself or joining a language learning community.

Extra tips for speaking more fluently – like a native!

Step 1: Choose your goal

When setting a goal to speak English fluently, it’s important to choose specific and achievable goals. Here are some actionable steps to help you choose a goal:

  1. Start with a clear motivation: Determine why you want to learn English. Is it for work, school, or personal reasons? Having a clear motivation will help you stay focused and motivated.
  2. Set specific goals: Instead of a vague goal of “becoming fluent,” set specific goals that lead you towards fluency. For example, learning 30 new phrases in 30 days or having a conversation with a native speaker this week.
  3. Create a plan: Plot out your daily English activities in advance to use your time efficiently and stay focused on your goals. Choose activities that are equal to your skill level.

Step 2: Start speaking English as much as possible

In order to achieve fluency in English, it is important to speak the language frequently. Regular conversation practice is the key to improving your skills and becoming comfortable with the language.

One way to incorporate English into your daily life is by speaking with native speakers or finding language exchange partners through apps or online classes.

Additionally, watching TV shows and movies in English, listening to English music, and reading news articles in English can help expose you to the language and reinforce what you have learned. It’s also important to work on pronunciation and learn whole phrases instead of just individual words.

Step 3: Focus on whole phrases instead of single words

To speak English fluently, it’s important to focus on whole phrases instead of single words. This is because fluency is not just about knowing individual words, but also about being able to use them in context.

Learning phrases helps you understand how words are used together and how to express yourself naturally. For instance, instead of just learning the word “tonight,” try learning the phrase “tonight, I am going to…” This way, you’ll have a ready-made response when talking about your plans for the evening.

Remember, the more you speak, the easier it gets.

Step 4: Learn some English slang

Learning and using English slang can greatly improve your fluency and help you understand modern English speech. Don’t be afraid to explore this aspect of the language, even though it may seem intimidating at first.

Here are some tips to get started:

  1. Watch TV shows and movies: This is a great way to hear slang in context and pick up new words and phrases. Pay attention to how the characters use slang and try to incorporate it into your own speech.
  2. Use online resources: There are many websites and apps that offer lists of popular slang words and their meanings. Some examples include Urban Dictionary and Slangit.
  3. Practice with native speakers: Talking to native English speakers is the best way to learn and practice slang. Don’t be afraid to ask them about words or phrases you don’t understand.

Here are three common English slang phrases, their meanings, and examples of how to use them in a sentence:

  1. “What’s up?” – This is a greeting that means “How are you?” or “What’s new?” Example: “Hey, what’s up? Did you have a good weekend?”
  2. “Chill out” – This means to relax or calm down. Example: “I know you’re stressed, but you need to chill out and take a break.”
  3. “Hang out” – This means to spend time with someone in a casual setting. Example: “Do you want to hang out this weekend and watch a movie?”

Step 5: Use resources made for your level

To improve your English speaking skills, it’s important to use resources that are appropriate for your level. Avoid jumping straight into content made for fluent speakers, and instead focus on materials designed for intermediate learners.

For example, instead of watching American blockbusters with subtitles in your own language, try watching English-language cartoons without any subtitles to gain new vocabulary from context.

Use resources such as textbooks, dictionaries, grammar books, and websites dedicated to assisting learners in reaching their goals. Many apps can help practice specific skills such as listening or vocabulary building.

Step 6: Use speech-to-text for all (English) text messaging

Using speech-to-text for all English text messaging can help improve one’s fluency in speaking English. By speaking out loud, you get practice forming sentences and using English vocabulary.

This method is especially helpful for those who communicate mostly in their native language with friends and family. With Microsoft’s Conversations feature, you can speak in English and have your words automatically translated into text in your native language.

You can also use text-to-speech apps to read English text aloud, which can improve your pronunciation and listening skills.

Overall, practising speaking English in any way possible, even through text messaging, can help you become more fluent and confident in your English skills.

Step 7: Talk yourself through everyday activities

Talking yourself through everyday activities is a great way to improve your English fluency. For example, when cooking, you can say out loud the steps you’re taking like “peeling the onions” or “adding salt to the water.”

This practice helps you learn new vocabulary and pronunciations, and it also forces you to think in English.

Step 8: Memorize conversation starters (and use them!)

Memorizing conversation starters is a great way to improve English speaking skills and avoid missed opportunities for practice. It’s important to find conversation starters that are appropriate for the situation and to practice them repeatedly until they feel natural.

Some examples of common conversation starters include asking about someone’s hobbies, interests, or travel experiences. It’s also helpful to actively listen for new phrases and words from native speakers and to try using them in conversation.

Some examples include:

‘So, have you been here before?’

‘That’s such a nice outfit, I love it’

‘How long have you lived in the area?’

Step 9: Share your opinions online

Sharing your opinions online can be a great way to improve your English speaking skills. By participating in conversations on social media, leaving comments on articles, or writing reviews on sites like Goodreads, you can practice expressing yourself in English.

Additionally, watching short videos on YouTube and leaving comments, or posting short opinions on Twitter can also help you practice your skills. You can even join online classes or set up virtual calls with English-speaking friends to practice.
