Kathrin decided to stay home for a few years after she had her second baby and thought this was a good time to improve her English. However, she couldn’t go to a language school with a baby and a small child! She needed to make learning English at home work well for her.

Why might learning English at home be the best choice for you?

It can improve your language skills in a comfortable and familiar environment

Let’s face it, some people are nervous in a new environment and learning English can be challenging. Learning English at home provides individuals with the opportunity to improve their language skills in a comfortable and familiar environment,.

Everybody’s situation is different. By setting individualized goals and pace, learners can focus on specific areas of language learning that they need to improve.

Using online resources and language learning tools, such as audio and video materials, grammar explanations, and vocabulary exercises, enhances the learning experience and allows for flexibility in scheduling to suit your own lifestyle – whether you are working or a student full or part-time, taking care of a new baby or big kids, or a hundred other situations.

Overall, learning English at home allows individuals to improve their language skills at their own pace and convenience.

It helps you to socialize with other English speakers

Kathrin used to work in a busy office, now she spends more time at home with her children. Learning English at home can help you socialize with other English speakers because it gives you the opportunity to practice your language skills with native speakers.

By chatting with friends online or joining English-speaking communities with members from around the world, you can learn new expressions, idioms, and even common abbreviations used in text messages.

You can also bond with others over shared interests, such as hiking or a love for a particular band or TV show. Socializing with English speakers can help you feel more confident in your language abilities and can open up new doors for friendships and networking opportunities – in Kathrin’s case, she hoped to meet other mothers with young children and also other people who she could become friends with.

It allows you to improve your self-confidence

Learning English at home can do wonders for your self-confidence! By setting realistic goals, being patient with yourself, and surrounding yourself with positive people, you can approach your studies with enthusiasm and a positive outlook.

Talking to yourself in English in front of the mirror can help you identify areas that need improvement and build your confidence in speaking. Kathrin decided to speak English to her children as well as their own native language, to give herself more practice time and to help them start to speak English.

Recording yourself can also help you see how you sound when speaking English and compare your pronunciation to that of native speakers. With regular practice and a can-do attitude, you’ll be speaking English fluently and confidently in no time!

What to consider when choosing an English course

1. Quality of instruction

Choosing an English course with quality instruction is crucial for achieving language learning goals. Quality instruction means having experienced teachers who are qualified and provide engaging learning materials.

Indicators of quality instruction include individualized lesson plans, personal tutoring, and access to professional courses and intensive classes.

Quality instruction also emphasizes the importance of self-study, group collaboration, and live classes to ensure better learning outcomes. Investing in quality instruction can lead to improved English skills, better communication, and career advancement opportunities.

2. Cost

Kathrin had saved some money for an English course, so she considered the options carefully. Tuition fees, course materials, and technology requirements are all costs that should be taken into account.

English classes can be expensive, but studying at home can be much less expensive than taking face-to-face classes in a language school. One way to save money is to look for extra free English lessons available online and find out if there are sales or special offers on courses – around the new year is a good time to look for a discounted course.

3. Availability and scheduling

The availability of courses can determine the pace of learning and the flexibility of the schedule.

This is important because it affects the pace of learning. If a course is only available for a limited time, it may be difficult to complete the course within the desired time frame. Additionally, if a course is only available at certain times, it may not be convenient for everyone’s schedule.

Even though Kathrin was mostly at home, there were times during the day when she preferred not to study because the baby was napping, the toddler had a playdate and her partner was coming home from work. She decided a ‘gym membership’ style course, when she could choose and book different English classes at different times and days worked best for her.

4. Teachers and level of expertise

When choosing an English course, it is essential to consider the teacher’s expertise and level of experience. A qualified teacher can make a significant difference in the learning experience by providing personalized feedback, creating engaging lesson plans, and tailoring the curriculum to meet the students’ needs.

For instance, a teacher with a background in business English can help students improve their communication skills in a professional setting. A teacher with experience in teaching pronunciation can help students overcome their pronunciation challenges.

Furthermore, a teacher with a deep understanding of the language can help students develop their writing skills, expand their vocabulary, and enhance their grammar. In summary, choosing a course with a qualified and experienced teacher can help students achieve their language learning goals effectively.

5. Content and exercises

Kathrin wanted to focus on improving her general English but tends to choose classes based on whether she is interested in the topic or not. Recently, she chose classes on the topics of TV, movies, holidays and story-telling. She didn’t think the lesson on football or cooking would be as useful to her.

An effective English learning course should include a balance of grammar, vocabulary, and practical usage. The course should have individual, group, professional, intensive courses, and more. The speaking section should include phrases and idioms used in conversation.

The provider should also provide a free online English test to help learners choose learning materials at the right level.

6. Equipment and materials

To learn English at home, it’s important to have the right equipment and materials. Here are some of the essential tools you’ll need:

  • A computer or smartphone with internet access to access online resources and courses.
  • Headphones or speakers to listen to audio materials and videos.
  • A notebook or journal to take notes and practice writing skills.
  • A good English dictionary (or dictionary app on your device) to look up new words and phrases.
  • English language textbooks and/or class reading materials to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Having these tools and materials will help you learn English effectively and efficiently, allowing you to progress at your own pace and achieve your language learning goals.

7. Variety of topics

Kathrin chose a course that is very flexible, meaning she could choose from a range of times, days and topics.

A good English course should cover topics such as general conversations, travel, business, culture, and entertainment. These topics are essential for improving fluency and confidence in speaking English.

For example, discussing people and their characters, planning trips, and describing lifestyles are useful in everyday conversations. Business English, on the other hand, can help individuals level up in their careers while learning about cultures and entertainment can broaden one’s knowledge and understanding of the world.

8. Supportive environment and feedback

As Kathrin attended more and more lessons, although she liked all the teachers, she started choosing more lessons with her favourite teachers as she found them the most interesting and supportive.

A supportive environment can provide students with the necessary motivation, inspiration, and guidance to achieve their language goals. This environment might include experienced teachers, engaging learning materials, and opportunities for collaboration with other students – zoom breakout rooms are a lot of fun!

Additionally, a supportive environment should allow for personalized learning, where students have control over how they learn and can create a study plan that fits their needs. Such an environment can help students stay committed to their learning, practice all language skills, and make good progress towards their goals.

Kathrin’s teachers spent at least 20 per cent of the lesson giving feedback to the class, correcting errors and suggesting better phrases following each activity. Kathrin liked this, because the whole class could benefit from this feedback.

The 8 Easiest Ways to Learn English at Home

Kathrin’s course was going well, so she decided to ask for tips to maximise the English-learning experience outside of class time.

1. Watch English-language movies and TV shows

Watching English-language movies and TV shows is a great way to improve your English skills at home. You can learn new vocabulary and test your comprehension while getting a glimpse into British or American culture.

Start by watching original films with English subtitles, and choose titles that you have already seen in your own language to help you focus on understanding English.

Keep up with the latest news by watching TV news broadcasts for 10-15 minutes each day, which can help you improve your vocabulary and listening skills. Some popular TV shows to watch include Friends, How I met Your Mother, Peaky Blinders, and Game of Thrones.

In Kathrin’s case, she also watched some English kids’ tv shows with her toddler. So put the tv on, grab some popcorn, and start learning English today!

2. Listen to English-language songs

Kathrin has always loved music. Listening to English-language songs can be a fun and effective way to improve your English skills at home.

By listening to music with English lyrics, you can learn new vocabulary, improve your pronunciation, and gain a better understanding of sentence structure. To make the most out of this method, try using tools like Lyrics Training or singing along to work on your pronunciation.

3. Read English-language books

Reading English-language books can be an effective way to learn English at home. It helps improve vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and cultural understanding.

To make the most out of reading, learners should choose books that are interesting to them and appropriate to their level.

Kathrin loves reading mystery stories, and decided to buy some copies of her favourite books translated into English. As she was very familiar with the stories, she found it easy to follow along and guess some words and phrases from context.

4. Use Translation Apps

Translation apps can be valuable tools for those learning English at home. Apps like Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, and iTranslate can help with translating words and phrases from your native language to English.

However, it is important to keep in mind that these apps may not always provide accurate translations. To effectively use these apps, it is recommended to double-check translations with a dictionary or language learning app like Duolingo or Memrise.

Kathrin used google translate for some phrases from her mystery story, and memorised some great examples which she then practiced in class.

5. Practice speaking English

Kathrin had hoped to meet other stay-home mothers in the class, and in the end she made a few friends and arranged to have a zoom call to chat in English.

To practice speaking English at home, start by speaking to yourself in English and gradually move on to speaking with friends or finding language partners online. Label objects in your home with their English names and write your shopping list in English to incorporate the language into your daily life.

She has made three new friends, one of whom also has young children, and enjoys weekly zoom conversations with them, outside class.

With consistent effort and dedication, you can improve your spoken English skills from the comfort of your own home.

6. Participate in hobbies

Participating in hobbies can be a fun and effective way to improve your English skills at home. Reading books or magazines about your interests can help you learn new vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Writing in a diary or blog in English can improve your grammar and everyday language use. Watching TV shows or movies in English can help you practice listening and speaking skills.

Playing video games or participating in chat rooms is another top tip – Kathrin quite often chats online in English with other fans of her favourite female mystery writers.

7. Schedule lessons and study time

A lot of students recommend scheduling a lesson or study session as if it were as important as an appointment that you can’t miss! This shows you are really serious about learning English.

Kathrin started writing classes, chat room sessions and zoom chats with classmates in her diary, and made an effort to schedule her other responsibilities around them. She found, as a result, she was much more likely to stick to her study plans.

8. Make it fun and reward yourself

Kathrin realised after a while that she was really enjoying her English studies, so she spent extra time finding blogs and videos in English that she would enjoy.

It’s important to keep yourself motivated and focus on English that will be useful and interesting to use.

After passing her end-of-course test, she and her partner decided to book a family trip to London, so that Kathrin could try out her English skills – she can’t wait!
