In this tutorial, we are going to look specifically at IELTS general training task 1 which is a letter.

1.Exactly WHAT is required and what you are asked to do!
2.What to think about and prepare before you start writing and this includes…
- Being aware of which STYLE of letter you need to write.
- There are some keywords to look for in the prompt to guide you on this so if you are asked to write to a friend, a relative, a teammate, a flatmate, or a classmate, then you can assume you need to write an informal letter.
- If you are asked to write to a company, a person you don’t know, a newspaper, a school or organization then the letter will be formal.
- Occasionally, you may be asked to write a semi-formal letter. This is the case if you are writing to a colleague or a neighbour.
3.Some key aspects to include in your formal letter as you are most commonly asked to write a formal letter. Many IELTS test-takers understand the basics of how to write a letter but may be unfamiliar with the specific requirements of a formal letter. There are a number of differences in style and confusing them will result in losing points. In this tutorial we will look at:
- How to start and finish your letter in the correct formal way.
- How to organise your letter and make sure you score the highest possible marks by reading the question carefully.
- How to make sure you raise the level of your grammar by including modal verbs and indirect questions to make your writing really sophisticated.
And
4.We will examine a great example of a formal letter of complaint and WHY this would score a BAND 9.
